Atlantic Spray Commercial Projects: Colonial Heights Courthouse

We recently worked on an Air Barrier Association of America project at the Colonial Heights Courthouse. As you can see in the photos, a new layer of insulation will now create greater energy efficiency in the building, decreasing the cost of managing the building’s power and preventing common issues associated with air and moisture infiltration in commercial properties.

A layer of spray foam insulation can be applied to the outside of commercial buildings to create an air barrier that prevents air from leaking into our out from the building. Not only does insulation moderate temperature, lessening the strain on an HVAC system, but it can also prevent moisture-related damage that can accumulate over time and be expensive to repair. Spray foam insulation is cost-effective and environmentally conscious. The popular product offers solutions to many of the most common problems faced by commercial property owners and managers.

Many commercial buildings can benefit from an application of spray foam insulation. If you are considering updating or upgrading your property, or want to reduce your energy bills, contact Atlantic Spray Systems, Inc. today for more information.

Study Touts the Environmental Benefits of Spray Foam Insulation

Responsible homeowners concerned with the energy efficiency of their homes often ask if spray foam insulation, especially closed cell foam, has a negative impact on the environment. It’s a good question, and we have answered, in the past with some of the following facts:

  • Closed-Cell Foam (especially the products that we offer) is often made with renewable resources. Some products are even made from soy!
  • Spray Foam Insulation is designed to last for the life of your home, whereas fiberglass insulation has a shelf life of, maybe, 10 years before it needs to be replaced (i.e. disposed).

A new report released by the Spray Foam Alliance makes a “life cycle assessment” (LCA) of spray foam insulation. The study looked at spray foam insulation from a “cradle-to-end of life” timeframe in three different US climate zones. The study looked at “primary energy from non-renewable resources” and five different “critical” environmental impacts on things like air and water.

The study, which was vetted by independent groups concerned with the insulation, concluded that the benefit of the energy saved in both home and commercial applications of spray foam insulation far, far outweighs the impact of spray foam from the time it is applied to the time of its disposal. As we have said time and time again, spray foam insulation is a responsible choice for earth-conscious homeowners and commercial building managers.

Stop! Don’t Replace Your Siding without Reading This First!

Siding is one of those products you know you will probably have to replace at some point during your home’s lifespan. If you are planning to commit to this kind of renovation right now, it is the perfect opportunity to consult with your insulation professional about improving the energy efficiency of your house.

Generally, in order to apply spray foam insulation, the gold-standard in home insulation products, we have to take sections of your siding off. This is labor intensive and increases the cost of your services. By coordinating the timing of your siding replacement with the installation of new insulation, you can save yourself real dollars as well as potentially expand the options you have to use different kinds of foam products, or even accomplish practical tasks like running helpful wires exactly where you want them.

Invest a little bit of time and logistical coordination when planning to replace your siding and your project will yield even better results than you hoped! Simply call us before your siding company starts installation and we will help you determine your options and make a great plan. Contact Atlantic Spray Systems, Inc. today.

Applying Spray Foam to Turn Your Quonset Hut into Useable Space

Do you use a Quonset hut for extra storage or workspace? Many people have these prefabricated units on their properties, but find them frustrating in less-than-ideal weather, or unreliable for sensitive storage away from elements like moisture, excessive heat and even pests.

Applying spray foam insulation to the walls and ceiling of your Quonset hut, however, can turn it into a completely functional space with increased building integrity and comfort. Properly finished, a Quonset hut is usable to store valuable items away from weather elements and can even be used as living space. The foam layer keeps condensation out in the hot months when the metal is so radiant that it has a huge effect on the internal temperature. The layer doesn’t even have to be super thick, just a few inches turns the building into an insulated space.

No other insulation material can convert a Quonset hut the way spray foam can. The roofs are general corrugated making it almost impossible to adhere traditional solid insulation sufficiently. If you could install it, the likelihood that it would fall off within a year is high. A few inches of closed cell foam can make a permanent and dramatic difference.

Make sure you check with a couple of insulation specialists before determining who to use to insulate your Quonset hut. Call us at Atlantic Spray Systems, Inc. and we’ll be happy to evaluate your building and offer you a quote.

Spray Foam and Noise Control

You already knew that an application of spray foam insulation can increase the energy efficiency of your home and reduce your utility bills substantially, but did you also realize that it can help control noise?

The creation of an air barrier in your home can prevent noise transmission, adding yet another layer of comfort to your surroundings. Airborne sound transmission is minimized. If you experience a high level of noise spillover from your family room, for example, and your television or other entertainment equipment, spray foam can seal the cracks and crevices that allow sound and vibrations to escape, containing the noise and improving the comfort of surrounding rooms. An application of spray foam insulation can actually increase the value of your home simply by creating independent living spaces that accommodate the kind of noisy lifestyle today’s families experience every day.

Spray foam is often used in commercial properties like office buildings and even schools to mitigate noise problems. If you have sound concerns and would like to find out if spray foam insulation can help, contact Atlantic Spray Systems, Inc. today and schedule a free estimate. We look forward to hearing from you!

Dehumidification: End Health Concerns and Property Damage by Conditioning Your Home Environment

Many people experience harmful or annoying effects of moisture in the air of their homes and don’t even know it is happening. You can easily see evidence of excess moisture, however, when warm air hits the coldest spot on your walls – usually, your windows. Condensation is the product of these conditions and can be one of the first warning signs indicating that you need to increase air circulation and decrease moisture in your home environment.

Atlantic Spray Systems, Inc. now offers the E-Z Breathe Ventilation System to help fix this problem and save your family the discomfort and damage that excess moisture, as well as contaminants and stale can cause. The system draws air throughout the home and expels stale, contaminated and moist air so what remains is healthier and less damaging to your house and family.

E-Z Breathe also helps regulate temperatures in your home. It works in conjunction with optimized spaces such as encapsulated crawl spaces and conditioned attics to dramatically improve the energy efficiency of your home. All you need is E-Z breathe and an operating HVAC system and you’ll soon enjoy some of the purest home air available.

Are You Losing Money Through the Roof?

Welcome winter weather! All over Virginia, homeowners are starting to turn on heater systems and preparing for cold days ahead. No matter how old or new your home is, if your attic is not properly insulated, you are quite literally losing money through your roof!

Fiberglass insulation provides a minimum standard of protection from heat loss and air transfer. It has a limited lifespan and should be replaced approximately every ten years. It does not conform to the spaces where it is installed, leaving gaps and spaces where air can creep in (and out).

Electricity prices are at a premium these days and most homeowners would prefer to avoid sending their precious heat out into the world. An expert application of spray foam insulation seals attic spaces and carries a lifetime warranty. The result is lower heating bills and more comfortable living spaces.

If the idea of spending less for better results is appealing to you, contact Atlantic Spray Systems, Inc. today to schedule a visual check of your attic and crawl spaces. We’ll be happy to give you a general estimate and address all of your insulation and weatherization concerns. Call us today!

Avoid Frozen Pipes – Weatherization Advice from Atlantic Spray Systems, Inc.

One of the most common concerns when winter arrives is freezing pipes – no one wants to experience the inconvenience and damage that can occur when the weather turns. There are measures you can take that will dramatically improve your chances of avoiding frozen pipes and give you peace of mind year-round.

If you experience freezing temperatures, even applying insulation to your pipes directly won’t help in the coldest weather. The only way to ensure that your pipes function regardless of temperature is to condition your crawl space. An application of spray foam on the walls paired with heavy plastic along the perimeter will encapsulate the space and prevent heat loss and the intrusion of cold air. Spray foam insulation is the most reliable solution in cold weather. And, as extra benefits, it can prevent cold floors and help maintain more reasonable temperatures in hard-to-heat rooms.

Spray foam comes at a higher initial cost than other methods of insulation, although it also acts to increase the energy efficiency of your home, reduce heating and cooling bills and comes with a lifetime warranty. Additionally, it allows more efficient and inexpensive heating of water throughout the colder months. When heat is dissipated in the crawl space from the pipes, it stays in the conditioned space without escaping the seal of the house.

Still, some homeowners may want or need to consider insulating their pipes with tube foam and duct tape as a more affordable alternative. Insulating with this method is definitely better than leaving your pipes exposed, and Atlantic Spray Systems, Inc. can still help. We would be happy to help you evaluate your options and choose the one that is best for your home and budget. Contact us today – we look forward to speaking with you!

Cold Floors in the Morning? Weatherization Tips from Atlantic Spray

It’s “that” time of year again. Mornings are crisp and sweaters are emerging from the depths of every closet. A common morning complaint can be heard once again – “our floors are so cold!” Thankfully, there is a solution that can not only alleviate this uncomfortable situation, but also improve the overall energy efficiency of your home.

Cold floors in a home are the result of under-insulated crawl spaces. Where fiberglass insulation exists instead of spray foam, air infiltration occurs letting your valuable heat escape and frigid air to creep in. If your floors are uncomfortably cold throughout the winter you should seriously consider conditioning your crawl space with spray foam insulation.

Unlike fiberglass, spray foam conforms to the space in which it is applied, including the cracks and gaps that are common in crawl spaces. By eliminating these openings, you seal the envelope of the space. As a bonus, conditioned crawl spaces help keep pests out of your home too!

If cold floors and rooms that seem impossible to heat are your concern, call us today and schedule an assessment of your property. Let us help you find ways to make your home a true shelter from the coming cold weather and the perfect cozy spot to spend your winter mornings. Find us at www.atlanticspray.com.

James City County Attic Encapsulation Project

We recently completed a spray foam attic encapsulation project at James City County’s Development and Planning building.

A blower door test revealed that the envelope of the building was extremely leaky and the air conditioning systems could not keep up enough to keep the occupants of the building comfortable. A leaky envelope costs more than just comfort – it costs real dollars as users overtax their HVAC system in hopes of creating a suitable work or home environment.

We encapsulated the attic of the building with spray foam which will take the latent load off of the air conditioning resulting in a much cooler and more energy efficient building! Taxpayers and employees alike benefit from the encapsulation.

If your HVAC system “should” be sufficient to keep your home or business comfortable, but you find that it is underperforming, the first thing you should do is schedule an “Energy Audit” or blower-door test. We will evaluate the current envelope and give you lots of practical advice for improving the energy efficiency of your property. Just like James City County, you too could find yourself saving money and energy while enjoying maximum comfort in your space. Call Atlantic Spray Systems, Inc. today!
